Since moving to sweden I feel like sustainability, and more specifically recycling, has become a
bigger part of my life. When I was living in London my boyfriend and I were much less mindful about what we threw away. I think this is mainly because our recycling routine was pretty much just to put it into one big clear bag provided by the local council, and leave it outside to be taken away; we didn't feel as responsible for what we were throwing away. However, since moving to Sweden I have to actively section out our rubbish and take it to be recycled at the recycling bank, therefore making me more mindful about what we're throwing away. Sweden also has recycling banks in the supermarkets where you can get money back for recycling your bottles - another incentive to recycle/think about what you're throwing away. Obviously, not everyone is perfect and some days are better than others, therefore I have put together my 'foolproof' ways to be a bit more sustainable every day.
Choose snacks without packaging
If you're taking a snack with you, opt for an apple or a banana rather than a packet of crisps.
Bring a fold up tote bag everywhere
I'm forever getting to the checkout and realising i'm having to either try and carry everything home in my arms or having to buy a bag (again). Carrying a fold up tote doesn't take up too much room in your handbag and saves on having to keep buying plastic bags.
Use alternatives to single use plastics
Switch plastic straws for metal ones, bottled water for your own reusable bottle and single use coffee cups (lined with plastic) for a reusable one.
Shop locally (when possible)
Shopping locally not only supports local businesses, it also reduces the carbon footprint that the product would usually have to get to you.
Use reusable wipes
Single use wipes block up landfills, however can be easily switched out for reusable cloths. You can also get reusable cotton pads for taking off your makeup that can be washed and reused (see cute ones here on Etsy).
